Cllr Stephen Gill leaves Conservatives for Liberal Democrats

8.00.00am GMT Mon 26th Oct 2009

On Friday Stephen Gill, County Councillor for Bridgwater South, announced his decision to leave the Conservatives and sit with the Liberal Democrats on Somerset County Council.

Stephen said he had become disappointed with the way Ken Maddock and the Conservative group are running the council, and criticised its regime of cuts to front line services in Bridgwater.

Theo Butt Philip, Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate for Bridgwater and West Somerset said:

"It's clear that the Conservatives are letting down the people of Bridgwater.

"The Tory District Council has closed the Splash without having provided an alternative, now the Tory County Council is threatening to cut funding for Police Community Support Officers.

"The Conservative Party isn't going to serve the interests of Bridgwater."
