Theo Butt Philip, Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate for Bridgwater and West Somerset has hit out over Ian Liddell-Grainger MP's comments on the proposed East Huntspill wind farm.
Mr Liddell-Grainger has described proposals for nine wind turbines as "crazy".
Theo Butt Philip has responded saying:
"We need to build more renewable energy projects to reduce our carbon emissions. I believe reducing carbon emissions is essential to bringing climate change under control; I have yet to be convinced that Mr Liddell-Grainger shares this view.
"He claims to believe using renewable energy makes sense, yet I am not aware of a single renewable energy project that Mr Liddell-Grainger has supported.
"He says that he is concerned about becoming the wind farm hub of the universe, this is clearly ridiculous - there is only one commercial wind turbine the whole of Somerset whereas Cornwall has over one hundred.
"Bringing more wind power to Somerset will be good for the local economy, their construction and maintenance will bring jobs - something Mr Liddell-Grainger is always using as an argument to support a new nuclear reactor at Hinkley Point but oddly he never seems to mention it when talking about wind power.
"I don't want unfettered construction. They shouldn't be built in National Parks, they shouldn't be built in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but I do believe they should be built and so far the arguments against this site simply don't stack up.
"This is not the only source of renewable power we need to look into, we should also be investing in off-shore wind and in harnessing the power of the Severn Estuary, but on-shore wind definitely needs to play a part."
